Seattle Art Museum

Growing up so close to DC has spoiled me into thinking museums and tourist attractions should be free. The world outside of DC is not as tourist-friendly and makes you pay for everything. So I am constantly on the hunt for free days, student discounts and specials at various Seattle attractions.

The Seattle Art Museum has proven to be the best at providing free stuff to do. I previously visited the Olympic Sculpture Park which is their outdoor branch. It is always open and always free, everyday, so it's obviously the best. I ran there after work last week after a particularly stressful day and it was SUNNY with an awesome view of the city.

On the first Thursday of every month, the actual indoor Seattle Art Museum is free to the public. A few of the other co-ops and I went this week after work to check it out. Since none of us are super into museums, we were in and out in about an hour and then got gelato. But there were some pretty cool things in there!

There was some modern and confusingly obscure art like the cars with arrows through them hanging from the lobby ceiling:

And a sculpture of a person-sized mouse suffocating a man in his sleep:

And this wall of old speakers which will shortly become the background of my phone:

There was also a lot of classic art that I know my mom really enjoyed when she visited, but those areas of the museum were pretty busy with all of the people taking advantage of the free admission day. I tried to steer clear of those massive crowds. But it's cool to know they have a diverse collection that fits to a variety of tastes.

This weekend was less eventful, with the highlights consisting of grocery shopping and cooking. I also saw The Grand Budapest Hotel with my roommate. I have never seen a Wes Anderson film before, but I like his directing style. We're planning to watch some of his other movies on DVD in the next few months.

Now I'm gearing up for what will be another crazy week. There is some major reorganization in my department and I have a new manager now, so we'll see how this goes! Wish me luck!
